Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the disruption it has caused to daily life, we have decided to make some changes to the Little Rebels timeline for 2020.
The Little Rebels Award is given by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers, and we want to announce the shortlist at a time when it is possible for radical and independent booksellers in particular to really champion the books. This is very difficult when bookshops are closed and mail order is limited.
So we have decided to postpone the shortlist announcement, originally scheduled for April, to early July. The winner’s announcement will then take place in September or early October.
We can’t know whether physical bookshops will have reopened by then, but we very much hope so – and if not, we will work to make sure the books are available to order through radical booksellers online.
The world will probably look different on the other side of this, and children will need bold, brave and imaginative books which can inspire new ways of thinking about our society. We’re very excited to share the 2020 shortlist with everybody, and we know it will be worth the wait.
